The gognies. The goonies game. I can remember seeing this several times in the theater with my friend Geoff Chisholm. Years later I would have the chance to see the house where the the "Walsh family home" was located (on a tour of Astoria, Oregon.
Astoria, a safe harbor town in the peaceful pacific northwest is a rarity in this day and age. The film seemed to bring the town to life. Not featured in the film is a quaint street car line. It is quite a lovely place to spend a weekend and certainly the continued success of the film has contributed to its survival.
One of the most interesting spots to visit in Astoria is the classic JC Penney store. The store on the outside resembles something from the 1930's. Inside you'll find much of the same contemporary merchandise you'd find at any JC Penney store in any mall. But Astoria, seems to have a magical ability to preserve its history and stay current at the same time.
Same is true for this film. It doesn't SEEM like a 27 year old movie.
But it is.
Actually it isn't. The movie is the same. We are just all 27 years older.
Watching it today through the prism of a man with 27 years of life experience doesn't make it any less exciting.
The car chase on the beach.
The creative gadgetry of "Data" sliding down the home made zip line. "Data" had a zip line BEFORE any one knew what a zip line was.
Chunk knocking over the statue and "breaking Brandon's mother's favorite part.
A very private part by the way.
Jeff Burleson and Geoff Chisholm (we took the whole staff to a screening in Sisters, OR on Maple Lane at Loker Avenue) heartily recommend this film for anyone who loves teenage adventure, wholesome goodness and the hard work of Steven Spielberg BEFORE he became STEVEN Spielberg.
